STUD SERVICE

I do not routinely offer stud service.
When I have done stud service it has been because I have thought
the breeding would enhance or nicely combine with the female’s lines.
A breeding really has to interest me enough for me to offer stud service.
The female also has to have had all OFA testing (hips, elbows, patella, cardiac, thyroid, vWD),
have a working title OR Championship (AKC or CKC or UKC or for their country)
and of course Registered with AKC or CKC or for their country.

The reason I am "picky" is that I do not wish to see anyone get stuck with pups that will not sell.

My first breeding female I took to a really nice male that lived down the road.
I informed the stud owner that I was new and that I would appreciate any help they could offer
when the time came to deliver or raise the puppy. They nodded in agreement as they took my cash.
8 weeks later my female became crazy, digging, panting and one by one delivered what appeared to be dead pups
Very upset I called the stud owner who told me "keep tryiing I'm sure it will work out". Huh some support.
I ended up with "1" live puppy that I could not sell. I again called the stud owner for assistance on where and how
to sell this puppy but again I was told "it will work out eventually"...
NO reputable breeder will offer stud service to a novice breeder, UNLESS they plan on offering support.
NO reputable breeder wants to see anyone struggle and loose pups or not be able to place their pups.
But as a breeder seeking Stud Service there are things to think about.

I also can not condone anyone not breeding quality or breeding properly with the future in mind,
as our name would be attached to resulting progeny.

The third reason I don't offer stud service routinely, is that there is not a ton of people interested in purchasing standard poodles right now.
The market is totally flooded with purebred poodles and "oodle" mutts, so placing purebred Poodle pups is really difficult,
especially for beginners in the poodle breed, that don’t have an established reputation and already have a waiting list.

We advise everyone to do basic market research before breeding.
Find out what is in demand BEFORE producing pups and then realise no one wants say …“cream” this year.
Breeders should be trying to produce pups for THEMSELVES and their program,
but they must also not ignore the fact that they will have 8-10 pups also needing a pet home
So Breeder's also need to know what is "in demand" because of public desire, or because of how great the quality is.
Breeders have to realise that they will be competing with 10-30 other litters in their area as well
so they have to consider what is going to make their breeding more desirable.
Is lowering the price the only way to place the pups and if so is that going to cover the expenses in producing that litter.
Is the pedigree or lines going to be desirable to other breeders and if so do you really want to place all the pups with other Breeders.
Lets face it. Pups get HUGE fast, so Breeders for sure want to have pups spoken for before they are conceived
and especially before they are born, so that they are not under any stress while raising their litter.
Nothing is worse than having a litter of pups getting older and louder and messier and eating more with each passing day.
Some stud owners may offer to help place resulting pups by sending you referrals, but this is rare, so it is advisable to ask them in advance,
so there are no miscommunications or hard feelings later.

Puppy Buyers are becoming more educated about how to buy a quality puppy.
Puppy buyers are realising that Quality Breeders achieve titles and accomplisments with their dogs other
than just producing pups for profit, so they will look for a puppy that has champion or titled parents.
Puppy buyers are also looking for parents that have all the health testing completed and the pups are registered,
that they are getting a quality puppy as opposed to the breeder that has unregistered pups with no health history.
As a result, when given the choice, puppy people generally won't usually buy from the Back Yard Breeder.
It is also important for Breeders to consider the price difference that pups can command.
A reputable breeder will usually command $1000.00-$2,000.00 for their puppies,
where as a breeder breeding lesser quality will usually get $350.00-$600.00 for their pups.
While this may seem like a decent enough profit, breeders also have to consider the costs associated with raising a litter.

It really doesn't take much to breed "properly" if someone is really keen to breed.
However if you are planning on breeding “anyway” then make sure and ask the stud dog owner
if they will help you sell any resulting pups... to help you out.
